Wildfire Evacuation Checklist
Before your home is threatened by wildfire, you should consider the following:
- Do you know the escape routes in your area?
- Do you have more than one escape route in case any are not passable because of fire?
- Does everyone in your house know the routs?
- Do you have important items already packed or staged and ready to go in a moment’s notice?
- Do you have a meeting location if family members get separated?
This is not a complete list. Take the time now to determine what is important for you to take in the event of an evacuation.

In an evacuation situation you might have time to prepare or, you may be advised to leave immediately. Having items prepared ahead of time makes immediate departure less stressful and safer for you.
If you are being evacuated because of a wildfire, here are some things to consider, if you have the time. Remember, your life and your family’s life are the first priority in any evacuation situation.
- Turn off the gas outside, at the propane tank or the main valve.
- Leave the electricity on.
- Keep an outside light on so firefighters can identify your house.
- Close all doors but leave the house unlocked.
- Leave a garden hose hooked up and in plain sight. Do NOT turn it on.
- Put a ladder up to the roof on the side of the house away from the fire.
- Move flammable furniture or deck items away from the structure or place inside.
- Move portable propane tanks inside.
Evacuate your home when instructed to do so by CodeRED, law enforcement officials or firefighters.
